Lesson 3 of 9 / Nutrition and transport in flowering plants
Root hairs: water and ion uptake
How does one long extension improve absorption?
In this lesson: Explain how root-hair structure supports water and mineral-ion uptake.
About 5 min
The key ideaA root hair increases the absorbing surface in contact with soil water. Water and dissolved mineral ions enter the plant through this surface.
Explore the idea
What does the extension change?
The extension provides a larger absorbing surface in contact with soil water. The thin wall gives a short entry route to the membrane. Both features support uptake of water and mineral ions.
Green outer line: wall. Orange inner line: membrane. Blue region: vacuole. Blue circles represent surrounding soil water, not a count of water molecules. Osmosis names water movement, not mineral-ion movement.
Explanation
A root hair is a long, narrow extension of a root epidermal cell. It increases the cell surface area in contact with water films around soil particles. A large contact area allows more absorption at the same time than a compact cell of similar volume.
The cell wall is thin, giving a short route to the membrane. The membrane controls movement into the living cell. A large vacuole contains cell sap; when soil water has higher water potential than the cell contents, water enters through the membrane by osmosis.
Mineral ions dissolved in soil water are also absorbed across the root-hair surface. They supply materials needed for growth: nitrate ions, for example, provide nitrogen used in making amino acids and proteins. Mineral ions are not glucose or ready-made plant food.
Separate adaptation from process. The long extension benefits both water and ion uptake by increasing surface area. Osmosis specifically names water movement, so do not call the movement of mineral ions osmosis. Detailed uphill ion-transport mechanisms are not needed to explain this structural adaptation.
Step by step
- 1
Name a structure
Use the long extension or thin wall.
- 2
State the immediate effect
It increases absorbing area or shortens the entry route.
- 3
Link to the function
Explain absorption of water and mineral ions from soil water.
Worked example
Equal volume, different shape
Two root surface cells have similar volumes, but one has a long root hair. Explain its advantage for absorption.
One way to explain it
The extension increases surface area in contact with soil water. More membrane surface is available for absorption, supporting greater uptake of water and dissolved mineral ions.
Why this answer works
- Compare area rather than claiming more cell volume.
- Locate the contact with soil water.
- State the uptake advantage.
Is this true? "Nitrate ions enter by osmosis because they are dissolved in water."
Osmosis is the movement of water through a partially permeable membrane. Dissolved mineral ions are different substances and their uptake is not osmosis.
