Compare how individuals, community groups and government respond to cultural differences and unequal resources, including the tensions and costs of each approach.

• Individuals and cultural diversity

  An individual's words and everyday choices can reduce misunderstanding or deepen it. Listening, checking assumptions and responding constructively can make interaction fairer.

• Community groups and cultural diversity

  Community groups can organise continuing dialogue, shared activities and practical cooperation across cultural backgrounds. They combine people's efforts and build relationships beyond a single encounter.

• Assimilationist policies

  An assimilationist policy expects minority or newcomer groups to adopt the dominant culture or national norms, often putting aside important parts of their earlier cultural identity.

• Integration policies

  Integration develops common participation and belonging while allowing people to retain distinct cultural identities. It involves relationships and shared responsibilities across groups.

• Individuals and unequal resources

  Individuals can contribute time, skills, money or useful resources to help people meet needs and access opportunities. Effective help responds to the person's actual circumstances and choices.

• Community groups and unequal resources

  Community groups can pool resources, organise reliable support and connect people with services. This can extend the reach and continuity of individual contributions.

• Government-financed support

  In a government-financed approach, government takes primary responsibility for funding services or support through public revenue, including taxes. This can reduce what people must pay directly and widen access.

• Shared responsibility for support

  A shared responsibility approach combines government support with contributions from individuals and, where relevant, families, employers or community groups. Government remains responsible for support and protections when people cannot meet needs on their own.
