• Three dimensions of sustainable tourism

  Sustainable tourism needs lasting jobs and income, respect for communities, and healthy natural systems.

• Stakeholders and decision-making

  Stakeholders have different priorities and power. Participation matters when people can influence decisions, not just attend meetings.

• Hard and soft ecotourism

  Ecotourism should support learning, conservation and local people. Judge those results, not just the eco label or group size.

• Community-based tourism

  Community-based tourism gives residents a management role. It still needs customers, skills and fair decisions to benefit the community.

• Pro-poor tourism

  Pro-poor tourism targets benefits for poorer people. Training and finance help only when people can use the opportunity and reach customers.

• Responsible production and consumption

  Manage both the services businesses provide and the visits people make. Protect residents' needs and keep total pressure within local limits.

• Fair benefits and trade-offs

  Look beyond averages. Compare who gains, who bears costs and whether the benefits can continue.
