Vietnamese opponents of colonial rule disagreed over how to bring change: armed loyalty to an emperor, organisation abroad or reform of society.

Can Vuong means Aid the King. From 1885, Emperor Ham Nghi's appeal encouraged armed resistance to French control in support of his authority. This gave supporters a recognised leader and a cause around which to organise. Later activists proposed other routes rather than simply repeating the same strategy.

Phan Boi Chau sought overseas support, including in Japan, to educate followers, build contacts and obtain resources for organisation against French rule. Phan Chau Trinh emphasised schools, practical skills and reform: a more educated and economically capable population would be better able to claim rights and change society. Their approaches overlapped - Phan Boi Chau also valued education - but they differed over priorities and the route to change.

French authorities restricted action through surveillance, watching political activity, and repression, using punishment or force to suppress it. Working within an institution or cooperating over one matter did not necessarily mean accepting permanent foreign rule. Nor did opposition mean that everyone chose armed struggle. Explain a response by connecting what people wanted to the method they thought could achieve it.

Worked example: Explain the difference between the two Phan leaders

Compare how Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chau Trinh hoped to strengthen Vietnamese ability to bring change.

  1. Phan Boi Chau looked abroad for contacts, training and resources that could support organised resistance.
  2. Phan Chau Trinh put emphasis on education and practical reform to build people's knowledge, skills and ability to claim rights.
  3. Both wanted Vietnamese people to become stronger, but their priorities differed. Shared interest in education did not make their overall strategies identical.

Watch out for this

Only armed resistance counts as a response to colonial rule.

Education, reform and organisation could challenge unequal power by building knowledge, resources and collective action. Armed struggle was one response, not the only one.
