French contacts created influence before conquest. Control of Cochinchina in the south later gave France a base for expansion into central and northern Vietnam.
This is the Vietnam essay option for G3 Full History, studied as an alternative to Dutch Indonesia. French presence before 1870 is non-examinable background. Keep three regions in view: Cochinchina in southern Vietnam, Annam in the centre and Tonkin in the north. French control developed in stages rather than through one takeover of all three.
French missionaries, people working to spread Christianity, and merchants had connections with Vietnam before colonial rule. During the late eighteenth-century struggle against the Tay Son movement, which challenged existing rulers, Nguyen Anh sought to restore his ruling family's power. Bishop Pigneau de Behaine, a French Catholic religious leader, helped him seek outside support. Help from French individuals created influence; it did not by itself transfer sovereignty, the power to govern independently, to France.
In the nineteenth century, French leaders used protection of missionaries and converts, Vietnamese people who had become Christians, to justify intervention alongside trade and strategic interests. France established colonial control over Cochinchina during the 1860s. French officials directed its government while using local officials to carry out instructions. This southern colony provided troops, supplies and administration for later expansion; Annam and Tonkin still required separate campaigns and arrangements.
Worked example: A connection is not yet a colony
Use Pigneau de Behaine's help to Nguyen Anh to distinguish an individual connection from a transfer of government.
- Nguyen Anh sought outside assistance in a struggle for power; a helpful French individual could gain influence through that relationship.
- Influence did not itself give the French state the authority to tax, govern or command Vietnam.
- Later French conquest therefore needs its own explanation in decisions, force and treaties, rather than being treated as the automatic result of early contact.
Watch out for this
French contact immediately made the whole of Vietnam a colony.
Distinguish individual connections, southern colonial rule and later northern/central expansion.
Check your understanding
Why did control of Cochinchina help France expand later?
- It provided a southern base for troops, supplies and administration.
- It placed the central and northern regions under the same government at once.
- It made France's earlier missionary contacts a transfer of sovereignty over Vietnam.
