What this lesson teaches
I can explain how globalisation spreads culture and can make cultures more alike or blend them.

Make a guess
In March 2024, Taylor Swift played six concerts in Singapore, her only Southeast Asian stop. The government gave a grant. What do you think it hoped to gain?
- Visitors, spending and attention that boost Singapore's economy.
- Better relations with neighbours, who welcomed the shows nearby.
- Mainly more local fans, since Singaporeans could see her without flying.
Show the answer
Visitors, spending and attention that boost Singapore's economy.
Mega events draw tourists from many countries. But they cost money, and people ask who really benefits.
Global concerts and sports events bring visitors and attention, but they cost money and raise questions about who benefits.
A mega event is a large concert, sports race or festival that draws visitors from many countries. Mega events are part of cultural globalisation: global stars and sports reach local audiences, and the host city becomes known around the world.
In March 2024, Taylor Swift performed six Eras Tour concerts at Singapore's National Stadium. Singapore was her only stop in Southeast Asia. The government confirmed it had given a grant to help bring the shows to Singapore, and some leaders in neighbouring countries criticised the deal for keeping her out of their countries. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong acknowledged it was an exclusive arrangement but said it was not unfriendly. The Minister for Culture, Community and Youth said the grant was not as high as people had guessed, but did not give the amount.
Singapore has hosted the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix since 2008, when it was the first night race in F1 history. Its contract runs until 2028.
Supporters say mega events bring tourists, spending and jobs, and help Singapore's image. Critics ask whether public money should support them, whether local residents benefit as much as visitors, and whether global culture crowds out local arts.
- Eras Tour
- Six concerts in Singapore, March 2024; the only Southeast Asian stop, supported by a government grant.
- Singapore Grand Prix
- F1's first night race, in 2008; contract runs to 2028.
Real examples to use
Eras Tour, March 2024
Taylor Swift played six concerts in Singapore, her only Southeast Asian stop, helped by a government grant. Neighbouring leaders criticised the exclusive deal. Use it to weigh the gains of mega events against costs and tension.
Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, since 2008
Singapore hosted the first night race in Formula 1 history in 2008, and its contract runs until 2028. Use it for how a global sporting event raises a city's profile.
Worked example: Using this briefing in an answer
A case study asks whether hosting mega events is good for a country.
- Give the case: Singapore helped bring Taylor Swift's six Eras Tour concerts in March 2024 as the only Southeast Asian stop.
- Benefit: visitors from the region came to Singapore, spending on hotels, food and transport.
- Cost: the government gave a grant, and neighbours felt the exclusive deal was unfair, which can strain relations.
- Judge: whether the benefits outweigh the costs depends on who gains, how much was spent and the effect on local culture.
Watch out for this
Mega events only bring benefits, so every country should host as many as it can.
They bring visitors and attention, but cost public money and can cause tension with neighbours. A fair judgement weighs both.
Check your understanding
Why did some neighbouring countries criticise Singapore over the 2024 Eras Tour?
- Singapore kept fans from neighbouring countries out of the ticket sales.
- Singapore spent more public money on the concerts than it would earn back.
- Singapore's grant came with a deal to be her only Southeast Asian stop.
Show the answer
Singapore's grant came with a deal to be her only Southeast Asian stop.
Right. The government acknowledged the exclusive arrangement, so fans in nearby countries had to travel to Singapore.
