Why did the Korean War begin, draw in the USA and China, and leave Korea divided? Follow the 1950 invasion, changing war aims and the 1953 armistice.
- Why Korea was divided
A line used to divide the occupation of Korea became a division between two rival governments. Both wanted to rule the whole country.
- Why Kim believed an invasion could succeed
Kim wanted reunification under his rule. Soviet backing and expectations of Chinese help made an attack seem possible, while uncertain American commitments encouraged a risky calculation.
- Why the United States and UN intervened
The USA saw the invasion as a test of containment, and the UN treated it as a threat to international peace. Their intervention stopped the South's defeat, but advancing into the North created new risks.
- Why the war widened and then stalled
Chinese intervention prevented North Korea's defeat. The resulting stalemate meant neither side could readily win, while widening the war carried the risk of a much larger conflict.
- What the 1953 armistice settled
The armistice stopped major fighting and separated the opposing forces. It left Korea divided and the final political settlement unresolved.
- How a Korean war changed policy elsewhere
The war made American containment more military. Commitments in Asia grew, and fear of a similar attack encouraged stronger Western defence in Europe.
