Lesson 2 of 7 / Climate, biodiversity and disease ecology

Compare whole-system carbon footprints

Why is zero exhaust not the same as zero life-cycle emissions?

In this lesson: Compare land-use, energy-source and food-production footprints.

About 7 min

The key ideaA fair footprint comparison uses a common functional unit and includes construction, fuel, land use and operation where relevant.

What disappears when you count only operation?

No combustion occurs at the panel, but materials, manufacture, installation and end-of-life processes contribute. An operation-only boundary cannot establish the whole footprint.

Compare per kWh of delivered electricity over a stated lifetime. This is an accounting diagram, not an emissions ranking. Food comparisons likewise need an explicit common unit such as mass, protein or another specified nutritional service, with land-use and production boundaries stated.

Explanation

Fossil-fuel power releases CO2 during combustion as well as emissions from extraction and transport. Wind, solar and nuclear generation have low direct operational CO2 emissions, but materials, construction, fuel processing where relevant, maintenance and decommissioning contribute to life-cycle footprints.

Hydroelectric generation avoids fossil combustion at the turbine, but reservoir construction and flooding can matter. Decomposition of flooded organic matter, especially in some warm reservoirs, can release methane. Site conditions therefore influence the comparison; hydropower is not automatically emission-free.

Bioethanol combustion releases CO2 that crops may have recently absorbed, but production uses land, energy and processing. Clearing carbon-rich habitats, fertiliser production and distillation can change the net footprint. It is not automatically carbon neutral just because its feedstock grew recently.

Animal-based food often requires feed production and energy transfers through another trophic level, and ruminants add methane. Many plant-based alternatives therefore have lower footprints, but product, production system and comparison unit matter. Compare per unit food, protein or other stated service rather than silently mixing denominators.

Deforestation can create a large initial carbon release that must be included when assessing a new activity. Use a transparent system boundary and discuss uncertainty instead of declaring a universal ranking from one local operation alone.

Step by step
  1. 1

    State the service

Electricity per kWh or food per specified nutritional unit.

  2. 2

    Draw the boundary

Include relevant upstream and downstream stages.

  3. 3

    Compare with caveats

Location and management can alter the ranking.

Worked example

Work through the evidence

A solar farm has no combustion on site. Why is its life-cycle footprint not exactly zero?

One way to explain it

Manufacturing panels and structures, transporting and installing them, maintenance and end-of-life processes use resources and can cause emissions.

Why this answer works
  • Direct operation is only one stage.
  • A non-zero footprint can still be much lower than an alternative.
Is this true? "Bioethanol is always carbon neutral because plants absorbed carbon."

Net impact depends on land-use change, cultivation, processing, energy inputs and regrowth assumptions.
