Lesson 5 of 7 / Transport in humans

The four-chambered heart

Why is the left ventricle more muscular than the right?

I can relate chambers, septum, muscular walls and valves to one-way pumping.

  • I can describe heart structure, contraction and valves.Syllabus

Syllabus K224 / K225, Topic 5(d). Describe heart structure, contraction and valves.

About 5 min

Make a guess. You are not marked.

Both ventricles pump the same volume of blood with each beat. Why is the left ventricle wall thicker?

  1. It carries oxygen-rich blood, which is heavier.
  2. It pumps blood round the whole body.
  3. It holds more blood than the right ventricle.
Show the answer

It pumps blood round the whole body.

The left ventricle supplies the whole body. The right ventricle only pumps to the nearby lungs, which need lower pressure.

The key idea

Atria receive blood, ventricles pump it out, and valves prevent backflow when pressure changes.

In a front view, the person's right is on your left. The vessels in this simplified section are spread apart so their connections are clear.

The left ventricle pumps into the aorta. Its thick muscular wall generates the higher pressure needed for systemic circulation.
  1. Tricuspid valve
  2. Bicuspid (mitral) valve
  3. Semilunar valves at the pulmonary and aortic exits

Vessel connections are spread out for clarity. Valve symbols mark locations, not a particular phase. Blue represents lower oxygen content; blood itself is red.

Explanation

The right atrium receives blood from the venae cavae and passes it to the right ventricle. The right ventricle pumps it to the lungs. The left atrium receives blood from the pulmonary veins and passes it to the left ventricle, which pumps it round the body.

A wall called the septum separates the left and right sides of the heart. It stops oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from mixing. The body needs blood at a higher pressure than the lungs do.

A hole in the septum shows why it matters. The left ventricle has the higher pressure, so oxygenated blood is pushed through the hole into the right ventricle and mixes with deoxygenated blood. Less oxygenated blood reaches the body, so cells get less oxygen for aerobic respiration and release less energy. The person gets tired easily, and the heart has to work harder.

Ventricles have thicker muscle walls than atria, because they pump blood out of the heart. The left ventricle wall is thicker than the right, because it must make a higher pressure to push blood all round the body.

The tricuspid valve is between the right atrium and right ventricle. The bicuspid (mitral) valve is between the left atrium and left ventricle. These valves stop blood flowing back into the atria when the ventricles contract.

Semilunar valves are at the start of the pulmonary artery and the aorta. They stop blood flowing back into the ventricles when the ventricles relax. Valves are opened and closed by differences in blood pressure; they have no muscles of their own.

Step by step
  1. 1

    Turn the diagram

Use the heart's own right and left, which are opposite to yours when you face it.

  2. 2

    Trace one side

Name the vein coming in, the atrium, the ventricle and the artery going out.

  3. 3

    Explain the parts

Thick muscle makes high pressure. Valves stop blood flowing backwards.

Worked example

Compare the ventricles

The left ventricle has a thicker wall. Explain why, without claiming it pumps more blood per beat.

One way to explain it

The left ventricle needs to generate higher pressure to drive blood through the systemic circulation around the body. Its thicker muscular wall can contract more forcefully. The right ventricle pumps through the lower-pressure pulmonary circuit.

Why this answer works
  • Compare the two circuits.
  • Link muscular thickness to pressure.
  • The two sides normally pump matching volumes over time.

Watch out for this

A student says: "Blood passes directly from the right ventricle to the left ventricle." What is wrong with this?

Show the answer

The septum separates them. Blood travels from the right ventricle through the lungs before reaching the left side.

Check your understanding

Which valve prevents backflow from the left ventricle into the left atrium?

  1. The bicuspid (mitral) valve
  2. The pulmonary semilunar valve
  3. The tricuspid valve
Show the answer

The bicuspid (mitral) valve

It closes when pressure in the left ventricle rises above pressure in the left atrium.
