Put it together: Ferry bookings are disrupted

G3 Social Studies - syllabus K336 (Social Studies component), 2027

A cyberattack disables a booking service used by ferry operators in two countries. Tickets cannot be checked online, and false messages offering booking refunds are circulating. Compare three responses that can be used together.

Passengers check and report messages

  • Passengers: They verify refund requests through the operator's known official contact and avoid giving passwords to an unverified sender.
  • Operators: Reports help staff learn which false messages customers are receiving and issue clearer warnings.
  • Booking service: Careful customers do not restore the shared system. Technical investigation and recovery are still needed.

Individual vigilance can reduce exposure to further deception and provide useful information. It addresses a different problem from restoring the service.

Local agencies coordinate recovery

  • Service: Specialists work with local operators on safe recovery and a temporary way to check bookings while the online service is unavailable.
  • Resources: Extra staff and checks cost money and can slow boarding while the temporary arrangements are used.
  • Overseas evidence: Local agencies may still need help from the country where relevant systems and records are held.

Domestic coordination can limit disruption and support recovery. It does not automatically supply all information or authority needed abroad.

National response teams cooperate

  • Information: The two countries' response teams share relevant warnings and coordinate with the overseas service provider.
  • Action: Clear contacts and responsibilities help the operators avoid treating a shared problem as two unrelated incidents.
  • Limits: Information must be checked and shared lawfully. Each country and operator still needs people who can act on it.

International cooperation addresses cross-border gaps. It complements local recovery and careful users rather than replacing them.
