Cleaning and greening improve daily life. Mitigation cuts emissions; adaptation makes supplies and services more resilient to climate change.

Cleaning reduces pollution through waste management, treatment and responsible behaviour. Greening adds shade, habitats and links between ecosystems. Both need maintenance and participation. Trees must survive, and waste systems must be used properly, to deliver the intended benefits.

Climate mitigation reduces emissions or increases their removal. Suitable building design, efficient systems and good operation lower energy demand. Cleaner energy reduces emissions from power generation. Check actual performance, including energy sources and total demand. Space and varying sunlight limit solar deployment in Singapore.

Adaptation makes water and food supplies more resilient. PUB combines water sources; SFA diversifies imports and supports local production. These options need energy, skills, finance and viable markets. Some actions help in several ways: vegetation stores carbon and provides cooling. Limited land means it must work alongside wider emission cuts and supply planning.

Step by step

Clean and green

Reduce pollution, maintain habitats and care for shared spaces.

Mitigate

Efficient buildings and cleaner energy reduce emissions.

Adapt

More reliable food and water options help manage changing risks.

Worked example: One building, two functions

In an illustrative building, efficient cooling reduces electricity demand and associated emissions, while shaded waiting areas reduce heat exposure. The first is primarily mitigation; the second is adaptation. Checking actual energy use and who can access the shade tests whether both aims are achieved.

    Watch out for this

NEWater removes all the need to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

Water resilience helps manage supply risks. It does not by itself remove the cause of global warming, and treatment also has resource requirements.

    Check your understanding

Which pairing correctly identifies the main purpose?

    1. Efficient building energy use: mitigation; diversified water supply: adaptation.
    2. A new food supplier: elimination of all global warming.
    3. Any green label: proven reduction in total environmental impact.
