Ground and building conditions affect shaking. Soft deposits may amplify some motion. Loose, saturated ground can liquefy if shaking is strong enough. Some reclaimed sites therefore need careful ground assessment and engineering. Reclamation alone does not mean a site will liquefy, and a felt tremor does not necessarily damage buildings.
