The Federation of Malaya became independent on 31 August 1957. Sovereignty means the authority to govern independently. It adopted a federal constitutional monarchy: states retained powers within a federation, while a monarch served under constitutional rules. In its parliamentary system, the government needed the support of elected representatives. Malaya's independence is distinct from the formation of Malaysia in 1963; Singapore did not become independent with Malaya in 1957.
British businesses and defence links continued, but the authority to negotiate those relationships had changed. Source D is Lee Kuan Yew writing from Singapore before independence, not a Malayan minister announcing an accomplished transfer. He expected British businesses and troops to remain, yet thought Malayan political control would let a later elected government seek changes.
