Sense of place is the meaning people attach to a location through experience, memory and interaction.
A sense of place is the meaning someone attaches to a location. A familiar void deck may matter because you meet friends there. A route to school may remind you of conversations with a grandparent. These experiences turn a location on a map into a place with personal meaning.
Repeated visits build familiarity with paths, buildings and people. Important events, such as a celebration or a difficult experience, can create strong memories. Natural features, buildings and relationships all help shape these meanings. Two people can therefore feel differently about the same place, and their feelings may be positive, negative or mixed.
Photographs, films, stories, posters and social media show selected views of a place. These are representations. A community exhibition may strengthen residents' attachment by sharing their memories. A poster may instead call an area empty or unattractive, even though residents value its daily life.
A representation tells you something about its creator's viewpoint. It cannot show everyone's experience. Ask whose stories it includes and whose it leaves out.
Step by step
Locate the experience
Name a particular path, landmark or gathering place.
Connect experience to meaning
Explain how repeated encounters or a memorable event creates attachment or unease.
Compare representations
Ask whose story appears in an image or description and whose may be missing.
Worked example: A poster changes the story
Imagine a redevelopment poster that calls an old market unused space. Stallholders and regular customers remember friendships and daily routines there. Their accounts show meanings that the poster leaves out.
Watch out for this
A sense of place must be shared by everyone who lives there.
Shared experiences can create common meanings, but different histories, abilities and routines can produce different attachments to the same place.
