After US troops left, the North defeated the South in 1975, while detente between the superpowers had already begun.
After the 1973 agreement, the South still relied heavily on US support and faced a determined enemy. Fighting continued and the North rebuilt its forces. But Americans were no longer willing to return to major fighting. So the South faced military pressure without US combat help on the old scale.
In 1975, a northern offensive broke the South. Saigon, the southern capital, fell on 30 April 1975. Vietnam came under communist control and was formally reunited in 1976. The war left immense destruction, deaths and people forced from their homes.
Detente means an easing of tension, not the end of rivalry. It began before the war ended. In 1972, Nixon visited China and the USSR, and the USA and USSR signed arms-control agreements limiting some weapons. American leaders hoped better relations with the North's supporters would help end the war. But China and the USSR kept aiding the North.
So Vietnam shows cooperation and conflict happening at the same time. It is wrong to say detente began because the war ended in 1975.
- 30 April 1975
- Saigon falls to northern forces.
- 1976
- Vietnam formally reunited under communist rule.
- 1972
- Nixon visits China and the USSR; detente under way.
Worked example: Put talks and war on one timeline
Does a 1972 summit prove the Vietnam War had ended?
- 1972: Nixon meets Chinese and Soviet leaders.
- 1972 to 1975: fighting in Vietnam continues.
- So detente and the war overlapped.
Watch out for this
Detente began after Saigon fell in 1975.
Detente was already under way by 1972, while the war was still going on.
