GP essay question guide

Does art reflect society or shape it?

Define reflecting and shaping, then look for cases of each. The best answers explain when art moves from mirroring opinion to changing it, and how slowly that happens.

Unpack this question first: 'Reflect' and 'shape' are the two ideas to compare: does art mirror what people already think, or change it? 'Or' invites you to argue it can do both, and to say when. Lesson: Abstract and values questions

Art can shift attention

A powerful work can make suffering or injustice visible to people far away.

Qualification: Attention does not always become action.

Culture shapes opinion abroad

Films, music and dramas can change how the world sees a country.

Qualification: Such influence is often backed by business and government, not art alone.

A model paragraph

Our own paragraph for this question. Copy its moves, not its words.

Art mostly reflects society, but at certain moments it shapes it by changing what people notice and feel. Most popular songs and films repeat the values of their time; their makers want an audience, so they rarely stray far from what audiences already believe. Yet art can also shift attention. Picasso's Guernica, painted in 1937 after the bombing of a Basque town, made the suffering of civilians in war visible to audiences around the world, and it still stands for the horror of war. Korean dramas and pop music have changed how millions abroad see South Korea, which shows art shaping opinion on a large scale. Art's power to shape society is real but usually slow, and it works best when it gives form to feelings people already half hold.

How it is built

  1. Stand: mostly reflects, sometimes shapes.
  2. Cases: Guernica and Korean popular culture show shaping.
  3. Judgement: shaping is slow and builds on existing feelings.
